[Chemical Knowledge]:The Chemical Method Difference Between Acetyl Chloride and Acetic Acid

Acetyl chloride and acetic acid are two common organic compounds, which have significant differences in chemical methods and properties. In this paper, the differences between acetic acid and acetyl chloride will be analyzed in detail from the three aspects of molecular structure, preparation method and chemical properties.

1. molecular structure

the chemical formula of acetic acid is CH3COOH, which is an acidic substance. The chemical formula of acetyl chloride is CH3COCl, which is an acylating reagent and belongs to an acid chloride compound. The difference in molecular structure between the two is mainly that one hydroxyl group (OH) in ethyl ester is replaced by chlorine atom (Cl), forming the structure of acid chloride group.

2. Preparation Methods The regular preparation methods of

acetic acid include acetic acid bacteria method, ethylene synthesis method and acetaldehyde oxidation method. Among them, the acetic acid bacteria method is the most commonly used method for preparing acetic acid. The preparation method of acetyl chloride is mainly achieved by adding chlorine gas to acetic acid or reacting an acid chloride compound with acetic acid.

3. chemical properties

acetic acid acetyl chloride and acetic acid have obvious differences in chemical properties. Acetic acid is acidic, can react with alkali to form acetate, and can remove one hydroxyl group to form acetaldehyde. Acetyl chloride is a strong acid reagent, which is corrosive and can react with nucleophilic reagents such as alcohols and amines to generate acylated products. In addition, acetic acid acetyl chloride can also be reacted with amines to form the corresponding amide compounds.

In summary, acetic acid acetyl chloride and acetic acid in the molecular structure, preparation methods and chemical properties are quite different. By understanding these differences, they can be better applied for different uses in laboratory and industrial production.
