Colorless oily liquid with aromatic smell. Freezing point-30.6 ℃, boiling point 145.2 ℃, relative density 0.9051(20/4 ℃), refractive index (nD20)1.5467, Flash Point (Open Cup) 31.11 ℃, autoignition point 490 ℃, viscosity (20℃)0.763mPa · s. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, methanol, acetone and carbon disulfide. It is easy to polymerize when heated or exposed to light or air, and can cause explosion due to temperature rise during polymerization. Explosion limit 1.1-6.1 (volume). Hydroquinone or tert-butyl catechol (2-20ppm) is often added as stabilizer to delay its polymerization.

Production method

Ethylbenzene is used as raw material, in the presence of ferric chloride platinum catalyst mainly T-315 (or aluminum), at the temperature of 550-560 ℃, it is hydrogenated to generate styrene and then rectified to purify more than 99.5 refined styrene.
