Nature Description

Colorless liquid with high refractive index and pleasant aromatic smell. Melting point ℃, boiling point ℃,79℃(1.33kPa), relative density 1.028(20℃), refractive index 1.5372. Soluble in alcohol, ether, chloroform, fatty oil and glycerol, slightly soluble in water. Orange when dissolved in concentrated sulfuric acid.

Product Applications

It is used to make soap and chewing tobacco, and is also used as an intermediate for organic chemical synthesis, a solvent for fiber resin and a plasticizer for plastics.

Production method

Acetophenone can be prepared by reaction of benzene with acetyl chloride, acetic anhydride or acetic acid under the catalysis of aluminum trichloride. In addition, when ethylbenzene is catalytically oxidized to styrene, acetophenone is produced by-product. The main impurities of industrial-grade acetophenone include α-methyl benzyl alcohol, phenol, acidic substances, water, etc. After refining, calcium chloride or sulfuric acid is dried and fractionated under reduced pressure. Or in the case of avoiding light and moisture, it can be crystallized step by step from the molten state, or pentane can be crystallized at low temperature. Raw material consumption quota: benzoic acid 1130kg/t; Acetic acid 555kg/t.
