Universal grade polystyrene is made by free radical polymerization or ionic polymerization of styrene as monomer. Production methods include bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, suspension polymerization and emulsion polymerization. Today's industrial production mainly adopts suspension polymerization and bulk polymerization.
1. The bulk polymerization method sends styrene monomer into the prepolymerization kettle, then adds a small amount of additives and initiator, and heat and stir at 95 ~ 115℃ for prepolymerization. After the conversion rate reaches 20% ~ 35%, then it is sent to the tower reactor with agitator for continuous polymerization. The polymerization temperature is increased to about 170℃ step by step to achieve complete conversion. A small amount of unreacted styrene is discharged from the top of the tower and can be recycled. The polymer is continuously discharged from the bottom of the tower, and the finished product is obtained after extrusion and granulation, and the product is delivered after packaging. The process is as follows.
2. Suspension polymerization uses styrene as monomer, water as medium, gelatin or starch, polyvinyl alcohol, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose and other protective glue or magnesium carbonate, magnesium silicate, calcium phosphate and other insoluble inorganic salts as dispersant, the sodium salt of maleic anhydride-styrene copolymer is used as auxiliary dispersant and benzoyl peroxide is used as initiator to initiate polymerization at about 85℃. It is also possible to conduct high-temperature polymerization in a high-pressure polymerization kettle at a high temperature above 100℃ without initiator. The polymer is washed, separated and dried to obtain colorless and transparent fine bead resin.
