Nature Description

Benzoic acid is a flake or acicular crystal with the smell of benzene or formaldehyde and is flammable. Relative density 1.2659. Melting point ℃, boiling point 249℃, refractive index 1.504. The vapor is volatile. Flash point (closed cup) 121-123 ℃. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, methanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, toluene, carbon disulfide, carbon tetrachloride and turpentine. Rapid sublimation at 100℃ can volatilize with water vapor at the same time. Benzoic acid often exists in nature in the form of free acid, ester or its derivatives. For example, it exists in the form of free acid and benzyl ester in benzoin gum, in the form of free acid and benzyl ester in the leaves and stems of some plants, and in the form of methyl ester or benzyl ester in essence, it exists in the form of its derivative hippuric acid in horse urine.

Product Applications

It is used for the production of medicine, dye carrier, plasticizer, perfume and food preservative, and also for the performance improvement of alkyd resin coating. It is mainly used for anti-fungal and disinfection and anti-corrosion; It is used as chemical reagent and preservative; it is usually used as a flavoring agent or preservative. Production method

It is initially prepared by dry distillation of benzoin gum or hydrolysis with alkaline water, and can also be prepared by hydrolysis of hippuric acid. The industrial production methods of benzoic acid include toluene liquid phase air oxidation, benzyltrichloro aqueous hydrolysis and phthalic anhydride decarboxylation, while toluene liquid phase air oxidation is the most common. Toluene and air are introduced into the reactor containing cobalt naphthenic acid catalyst, and the reaction is carried out under the conditions of reaction temperature 140-160℃ and operating pressure 0.2-0.3MPa to generate benzoic acid, crude benzoic acid is obtained by steaming off unreacted toluene, and then distilled under reduced pressure to obtain the finished product. The final product obtained by phthalic anhydride decarboxylation is not easy to refine, and the production cost is high, which is only used in the manufacturing process of medicine and other products with small batches. The products of toluene chloride method are not suitable for food. Benzoic acid has different specifications for industrial use, food use, medicine use, etc. Food Grade should meet the requirements of GB1901-80, the content is above 99.5, the melting point is 121-123 ℃, and quality indexes such as easy oxide; Easy carbide; Chlorinated compounds; Burning residue; Heavy metals; Arsenic content are specified. Raw material consumption quota: toluene 1140kg/t; Cobalt naphthenic acid 4kg/t. In addition, benzoic acid can be co-produced when benzaldehyde is produced from toluene.
