Colorless stable combustible liquid with pleasant smell. Freezing point-84 ℃(-80.4 ℃), boiling point 116.8 ℃, relative density 0.8020(20/4 ℃), refractive index 1.3962, flash point 22.78 ℃, natural point 460 ℃. It is miscible with alcohol, benzene, ether and most organic solvents, and slightly soluble in water. Vapor and air form explosive mixture, explosion limit 1.4-7.5 (volume).

Production method

It is obtained by selective catalytic hydrogenation of isopropylacetone. 1t product consumes about 1220kg isopropylacetone and 550 m3 hydrogen. Another production process is acetone one-step process. Liquid acetone is preheated. Under the action of bifunctional catalysts such as KON-AL2O3-Pb, Mg-SiO-Pb, cation exchange resin-Palladium, zirconium phosphate-bar and copper chromium, condensation, dehydration and hydrogenation reaction are carried out in a fiexed bed reactor, generate MIBK. This method has short process, small investment, high conversion rate and low cost. The largest MIBK device in China, cooperated by Jinling Petrochemical fertilizer plant and Tianjin University, adopted acetone one-step method, and was put into production in February, 95, with the purity of the product reaching 99. It can also be obtained by condensation of isopropyl alcohol under normal pressure.
