[Chemical Knowledge]:TOTM production and manufacturing methods and processes.

TOTM(Trioctyl Trimellitate) is a commonly used plasticizer, widely used in plastics, rubber, paint and other fields. Its manufacturing method mainly has two kinds of esterification method and ester exchange method.

1. esterification

esterification is the main method for the production of TOTM, and its raw materials are phthalic anhydride and n-octanol. Phthalic anhydride and n-octanol are esterified in the presence of an acidic catalyst to produce TOTM and water. The production process of the

esterification method is as follows:

1. Phthalic anhydride and n-octanol are added to the reactor at a molar ratio of 1:3, and acid catalyst is added at the same time.
2. Heat the reaction kettle to a certain temperature and keep it for a certain time to make the esterification reaction fully carried out.
3. After the reaction is complete, the reactor is cooled and TOTM and water are separated.
4. Refine TOTM to remove impurities and obtain pure TOTM product. The advantages of

esterification method are easy to obtain raw materials, mature production process and stable product quality. However, this method requires the use of acidic catalysts, which is corrosive to the equipment and also produces a certain amount of waste water.

2. Transesterification

Transesterification is another method for the production of TOTM, where the starting materials are triethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride. Triethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride undergo a transesterification reaction under the action of a catalyst to produce TOTM and by-product glycerol. The production process of

transesterification method is as follows:

1. Triethylene glycol and phthalic anhydride are added to the reactor at a molar ratio of 1:3, and the catalyst is added at the same time.
2. Heat the reaction kettle to a certain temperature and keep it for a certain time to make the transesterification reaction fully carried out.
3. After completion of the reaction, the reactor was cooled and TOTM and glycerol were separated.
4. Refine TOTM to remove impurities and obtain pure TOTM product. The advantage of

transesterification method is that it does not need to use acidic catalyst, it is less corrosive to the equipment, and the by-product glycerol also has certain economic value. However, the production cost of this method is relatively high and requires the use of relatively expensive catalysts.

No matter which method is used to produce TOTM, it is necessary to strictly control the production process and product quality to ensure product stability and safety. At the same time, it is also necessary to strengthen the treatment and recycling of waste to reduce environmental pollution.
