On May 30, Zibo Qixiang Tengda Chemical Co., Ltd. announced that the company invested 300000 tons/year propylene oxide the project production line has been completed, the plant process has been fully integrated and successfully produced qualified products, to achieve a successful start-up. After the project is put into operation, the company's propylene oxide product production capacity will reach 300000 tons/year, and the subsequent production will be reached as soon as possible according to the operation of the device.

Project Overview


in order to realize the smooth extension of the industrial map from the carbon four industry to the carbon three industry, form a relatively perfect carbon three industrial chain layout of propane-propylene-propylene oxide, and form the linkage between the upstream and downstream of the industrial chain to the greatest extent, Qixiang Tengda announced the investment and construction of 300000 tons/year propylene oxide project on August 31, 2019.

ThyssenKrupp was responsible for the process design and supply of key equipment for the new plant. Evonik licensed its unique hydrogen peroxide process technology to Qixiang Tengda to support the production of propylene oxide plants. In addition, the two companies have also entered into a long-term supply agreement with Qixiang Tengda for catalysts used in the propylene oxide process. At the same time, the project is supporting the construction of 205000 tons/year hydrogen peroxide plant for the production of high concentration hydrogen peroxide.

At present, the 300000 tons/year propylene oxide project production line has been completed, the plant process has been completed and successfully produced qualified products, to achieve a successful start-up. After the project is put into production, the company's propylene oxide product production capacity will reach 300000 tons/year, the follow-up company will further optimize the relevant process parameters according to the operation of the device, so that the device as soon as possible to reach production.

Raw materials and technology of propylene oxide


propylene oxide (PO) is the third largest propylene derivative in addition to polypropylene and acrylonitrile. It is an important basic organic chemical synthesis raw material, mainly used in the production of polyether polyols, propylene glycol and various non-ionic surfactants.
Among them, polyether polyol is an important raw material for the production of polyurethane foam, thermal insulation materials, elastomers, adhesives and coatings, etc. All kinds of nonionic surfactants are widely used in petroleum, chemical, pesticide, textile, daily chemical and other industries. At the same time, propylene oxide is also an important basic chemical raw material.

At present, in the production technology of PO, HPPO technology has the characteristics of less pollution and mild reaction conditions. In the field of HPPO, Evonik has developed a proprietary HPPO technology with ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions, leveraging more than a century of global production experience in peroxide and expertise in downstream applications, as well as expertise in the development and production of titanium silicalite (TS-1) catalysts, Bode said. The technology uses high concentration hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant to directly oxidize propylene to PO. Bode said that this process only produces water as a by-product, and requires relatively low steam and electricity consumption. It has multiple advantages such as no co-products, low investment cost, high raw material utilization efficiency, environmental friendliness, and mature technology. The key process steps are protected by intellectual property rights and are interconnected with upstream and downstream industrial chains, which is convenient for manufacturers to develop upstream and downstream industries.


Propylene Oxide Market Overview


by the end of 2022, the domestic propylene oxide production capacity will reach 4.902 million tons/year. As shown in the above table, the specific new enterprises will add 935000 tons in total. Among them, except for a small amount of alcohol ether used by Taixing Yida, there is no supporting downstream, and the market commodity volume will increase. However, Jiangsu Fuqiang and China Shipping Fine Devices have not been opened during the year. According to statistics, the annual output will reach 3.8 million tons, up to +2.93 compared with last year, a small increase, but the downstream demand, in addition, after the profit reduction of new process losses, the economic negative frequency of the year, the industry capacity utilization rate decreased by 13.61 percentage points year-on-year to 77.52.

In 2023, the new capacity projects with high realization rate of propylene oxide in the world are still dominated by China, as shown in the above table. Among them, Satellite Petrochemical, Jincheng Petrochemical, Tianjin Petrochemical and China Shipping Fine are all scheduled to be put into production around the Spring Festival in January. At the same time, Qixiang Tengda and Taixing Yida may also have restart expectations. Ideally, in 2023, the domestic total new capacity is 2.728 million tons/year, and overseas Leander 470000 tons/year, the global total of 3.198 million tons/year production plan, although some of the delay may be, but such a large amount of capacity release, 2023 concentrated expansion period continued, domestic propylene oxide capacity utilization rate is still expected to continue to move down, the market will also face greater challenges.
