Polymethyl methacrylate (Poly(methyl methacrylate), referred to as PMMA), is a kind of methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer polymerization of thermoplastic polymer. PMMA is often called organic glass or acrylic glass, which has high transparency, excellent weather resistance and aging resistance. Its refractive index is close to glass, the light transmittance can reach 92%-94%, and it has a good filtering effect on ultraviolet light. PMMA has high hardness, but poor toughness, and is prone to fracture when subjected to strong impact. Its density is between 1.18-1.20g/cm³, its melting point is about 160°C, and its glass transition temperature is about 105°C.
PMMA has a wide range of applications, covering a variety of products from daily necessities to high-tech fields. Due to its excellent optical properties and high transparency, PMMA is commonly used in the manufacture of optical lenses, transparent windows, display cases, lamp covers and advertising signs. Its weather resistance makes it excellent in outdoor applications, such as skylights, sun panels and noise barriers in buildings. PMMA is also widely used in medical devices (e. g., dental materials, dialyzers) and the automotive industry (e. g., dashboards, lampshades). In the aerospace sector, PMMA is used as a porthole and canopy material for aircraft.
The main upstream raw material for the production of PMMA is methyl methacrylate (MMA). The preparation of MMA is usually based on acetone cyanohydrin and ethylene. Acetone cyanohydrin method is through the reaction of acetone and hydrocyanic acid to generate cyanohydrin, and then through sulfuric acid hydrolysis to generate MMA; ethylene law is based on ethylene as raw material, through the oxidation of acetic acid to generate acetic acid, and then through acetic acid esterification and methylation to generate MMA. Because the acetone cyanohydrin method technology is more mature, and the production capacity is large, the cost is relatively low, it has become the main method of producing MMA. The production of MMA also requires catalysts, solvents and other auxiliary materials, and the supply and price fluctuations of these chemicals will affect the production cost of PMMA.
PMMA is an important engineering plastic, and its downstream products involve many fields. Representative products in the consumer goods field include optical lenses, decorative materials, household goods, electronic display screens, etc. In the construction field, PMMA is widely used in windows, skylights, bathtubs, sound insulation panels, etc. In the automotive industry, PMMA is used in the manufacture of lampshades, dashboards, windshields, etc. In the medical field, PMMA is used as bone cement, artificial teeth, dialyzer components, etc. The demand for PMMA in various fields is growing, which also promotes the continuous development and technological progress of the PMMA industry.
PMMA should be stored in a dry, well-ventilated environment, avoid direct sunlight and high temperature environment, to prevent material aging and performance degradation. The storage temperature is generally controlled between 10-30°C, and the relative humidity should be lower than 70%. PMMA has a certain moisture absorption, so it is easy
