Polysorbate (Polysorbate) is a kind of non-ionic surfactant made of sorbitol and its derivatives esterified with fatty acids. The common types are polysorbate 20(Tween 20) and polysorbate 80(Tween 80). They usually appear as pale yellow to amber viscous liquids or semi-solids. Polysorbate has excellent emulsifying, dispersing and wetting properties, and can show good solubility in solvents with different polarity. Polysorbate also has low toxicity and good biocompatibility, and is widely used in food, medicine and cosmetics.
Polysorbates have a wide range of uses in different industries. In the food industry, polysorbate is used as an emulsifier in the production of dairy products, mayonnaise and various sauces, which can significantly improve the stability and taste of products. In the field of medicine, polysorbates are often used as excipients in pharmaceutical preparations, especially in injections and vaccines, to stabilize pharmaceutical ingredients and improve drug dispersibility. In the cosmetics industry, polysorbates are used as emulsifiers, moisturizers and dispersants, and are widely used in products such as lotions, creams and hair dressings, which can significantly improve the texture and feel of the product. Polysorbates also have important applications in industries such as textiles, pesticides and coatings.
The main upstream feedstocks for polysorbates include sorbitol and various fatty acids. Sorbitol is a polyol prepared from glucose, and fatty acids are usually derived from fatty acids in vegetable oils or animal fats, and common ones are stearic acid, lauric acid, etc. In the production process of polysorbate, these raw materials are esterified to form sorbitan fatty acid esters, and then further polymerized with ethylene oxide to form the final product.
In terms of downstream products, as an important surfactant, polysorbate has a wide range of downstream products. In addition to being directly used in functional additives such as emulsifiers, dispersants and wetting agents, it is also used in the production of various compound surfactants, which are used in food, medicine, cosmetics, textiles, pesticides and other industries, forming a huge downstream market demand.
Because of its relatively stable chemical properties, polysorbate storage conditions are not harsh, but in order to ensure product quality, some basic storage requirements still need to be paid attention. Polysorbate should be stored in a closed container and avoid prolonged contact with air to prevent oxidation or hydrolysis. The storage environment should be kept dry, and the temperature should be controlled between 15-30 ℃ to avoid high temperature or direct sunlight. To prevent contamination and mixing, chemicals such as strong acids, strong bases and strong oxidants should be kept away. If the storage time is long, it is necessary to regularly check the appearance and physical and chemical properties of the product to ensure that it remains stable during the shelf life.
With the increase of global consumption level and the increase of demand for high quality auxiliary materials in various industries, the market demand for polysorbate continues to grow. In the food industry, consumer demand for natural, safe and highly effective emulsifiers has driven the widespread use of polysorbates. In the field of medicine, with the rapid development of biopharmaceutical and vaccine research and development, the importance of polysorbate as pharmaceutical excipients has become increasingly prominent. In the cosmetics industry, with the rise of natural skin care products and efficient functional cosmetics, the application of polysorbate is also expanding. With the enhancement of environmental awareness, polysorbate, as a surfactant with good biodegradability, has gradually received more attention.
Polysorbate is widely used in food, medicine, cosmetics and other fields because of its excellent emulsifying, dispersing and wetting properties. Its main upstream raw materials are sorbitol and fatty acids, which are produced by esterification and polymerization. In order to ensure product quality, polysorbate needs to be stored under dry, dark and closed conditions. Looking to the future, with the increasing demand for high quality and environmentally friendly auxiliary materials in various industries around the world, the market prospect of polysorbate is very broad.
