[Chemical Knowledge]:Difference between cresol and m-cresol

Cresol and m-cresol are two common chemicals, which have some differences in chemical structure, properties and uses.

from the chemical structure, the chemical name of cresol is methyl phenol, the molecular formula is C7H8O, and the structural formula is CH3C6H4OH. The chemical name of m-cresol is m-methyl phenol, the molecular formula is C7H8O, and the structural formula is CH3C6H4OH, but their methyl (CH3) positions in the molecular structure are different, which leads to their differences in physical and chemical properties.

from the point of view of physical properties, there are some differences in the appearance, melting point and boiling point of cresol and m-cresol. Cresol is white to yellowish crystals, with a special phenolic taste, melting point of 17 ℃, boiling point of 198 ℃. M-cresol is colorless to yellowish crystals, also has a special phenolic taste, melting point of 29 ℃, boiling point of 244 ℃. It can be seen that m-cresol has a higher melting point and a higher boiling point than cresol.

again, from the chemical properties, cresol and m-cresol have differences in solubility and oxidation. Cresol is soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and ether, slightly soluble in water. It can be neutralized by sodium hydroxide and acid. m-cresol is soluble in acetone and ether solvents, slightly soluble in water. It reacts with bleaching powder, nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid and other oxidizing substances.

from the use point of view, cresol and m-cresol in the pharmaceutical, chemical and other fields have different applications. Cresol is mainly used as an antibacterial agent and surfactant, widely used in medicine, leather, dye, dyeing and other industries. The m-cresol is mainly used as a fungicide and fungicide, commonly used in wood and coatings and other anti-corrosion and anti-mold treatment.

To sum up, there are obvious differences between cresol and m-cresol in chemical structure, properties and uses. Understanding and distinguishing the difference between the two is of great significance for their correct application and rational use.
