The manufacturing method
of phenylethyl alcohol
phenylethyl alcohol, also known as 2-phenylethyl alcohol or β-phenylethyl alcohol, is a colorless to pale yellow transparent liquid with a rose fragrance. It is insoluble in water, but miscible in ethanol, ether, glycerol and other organic solvents. Phenylethyl alcohol has important applications as a fragrance, solvent and pharmaceutical intermediate. In the field of chemical production raw materials, the manufacturing methods of phenethyl alcohol are mainly the following:
1. Acetophenone reduction method
Acetophenone reduction method is the main method for the production of phenethyl alcohol, usually metal hydride as a reducing agent, such as lithium aluminum hydrogen, sodium borohydride and so on. In this process, acetophenone is reduced to phenethyl alcohol under the action of a reducing agent. The method has mild reaction conditions and simple operation, but requires the use of a large amount of reducing agent and high cost.
2. styrene hydration
styrene hydration is based on styrene as raw material, under the action of acidic catalyst and water addition reaction, the generation of benzene ethanol. This method has harsh reaction conditions and requires high temperature and high pressure, but the raw materials are easily available and the cost is low.
3. Vinyl benzene oxidation
Vinyl benzene oxidation is vinyl benzene as raw material, through the oxidation reaction to prepare phenylethanol. The raw material cost of this method is low, but a large amount of by-products will be produced in the reaction process, which requires further separation and purification.
No matter which method is used to manufacture phenylethyl alcohol, factors such as reaction conditions, raw material cost, operation difficulty, and environmental impact need to be considered. In the actual production process, a suitable manufacturing method can be selected according to specific needs and conditions.
In addition, with the continuous progress of science and technology, new manufacturing methods are constantly emerging. For example, the production of phenylethanol by biological method has gradually become a research hotspot, and the production of phenylethanol by microbial fermentation or enzyme catalytic conversion of biomass raw materials has the advantages of environmental protection and sustainability.
In short, in the field of chemical production raw materials, the manufacturing methods of benzene ethanol are varied, and the selection of the appropriate manufacturing method needs to consider many factors, including raw material cost, reaction conditions, operation difficulty, environmental impact and so on. With the continuous advancement of science and technology, new manufacturing methods are constantly emerging, providing more options for the production of phenylethanol.
