[Chemical Knowledge]:What is CAS?

CAS number (Chemical Abstracts Service Registry Number) refers to an identification system for compounds. CAS was created by the US Chemical Abstracts Service (Chemical Abstracts Service) and is widely used in the investigation and research of intellectual property, chemical measurement, and environmental and health aspects of chemicals on a global scale. The CAS number is a 10-digit sequence of three components that uniquely identifies a specific compound.

CAS numbers are formed in a similar way to decimal numbers, they actually have more meaning. In general, the first two digits represent the year of the CAS number record, the third digit is a check digit, and the remaining seven digits are unique identifiers composed of other digits. Each compound has only one CAS number, in other words, the CAS number is an effective way to distinguish different compounds. The role of the

CAS number is not only to uniquely identify a compound, but also to provide important information about the properties and safety of the compound. Basic information such as the name, molecular formula, molecular weight, melting point, boiling point and other physical and chemical properties of the compound can be obtained from the CAS number. In addition, the CAS number can indicate safety information related to the toxicity and health hazard properties of the compound, allowing researchers and users to better understand the properties and risk of the compound.

Because of the importance of the CAS number in chemical information management, it has become an international standard in the chemical community. The CAS number has become one of the necessary information in various chemical substance registration systems around the world. For example, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires any company that produces, introduces, and sells chemicals to report the relevant CAS number to it. Similarly, in Europe, the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) requires that the declarant of a chemical must provide it with the relevant CAS number.

CAS plays an important role in chemical management and safety control, and is of great significance to the research, development and evaluation of chemicals. It not only uniquely identifies and identifies a chemical, but also details the properties and safety information of the compound, allowing people to better understand the risks associated with the compound.
