Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is an important organic chemical raw material, which is widely used in plastics, textile, construction, automobile, electronics and other industries. This article will introduce the production process and preparation method of MMA.
1. MMA production process
MMA production process is divided into three, respectively, propylene alcohol oxidation, hydrogen cyanide ammonia and methyl formate cracking method.
1. propylene alcohol oxidation method
propylene alcohol oxidation method is the main production process of MMA at present. Its principle is to react propylene alcohol and formic acid to generate propyl formate, and then decompose it into MMA and carbon dioxide. See the following diagram for the process flow.
advantages: easy access to raw materials, mature technology, high production efficiency, stable product quality.
disadvantages: the process is more complicated, the equipment requirements are high, and the production cost is high.
2. hydrogen cyanide ammonia method
hydrogen cyanide ammonia method is the traditional production process of MMA, its principle is the reaction of hydrogen cyanide and methyl acrylate to produce methyl cyanate, and then its hydrogenation decomposition into MMA. See the following diagram for the process flow.
advantages: simple operation, mature production process, high product purity, no need to use oxidant.
disadvantages: the need to use highly toxic hydrocyanic acid and ammonia, harmful to the environment and human health; low product yield, high production costs.
3. Methyl formate cleavage
Methyl formate cleavage is a very simple method for preparing MMA. The principle is to heat methyl formate to high temperature and decompose it into MMA and formic acid. See the following diagram for the process flow.
advantages: simple operation, no pollution problems, high product yield.
disadvantages: need to be heated to a higher temperature, high equipment requirements; separation of formic acid is more difficult, the need to use distillation technology; product quality is not stable.
2. MMA preparation method
MMA preparation method has two kinds: single stage and two stage method.
1. Single-stage method
single-stage method is to add allyl alcohol, formic acid and oxidizing agent together to react in the reactor to generate propyl formate and decompose it into MMA and carbon dioxide. This method is simple to operate, but the product quality is not as stable as the two-stage method, which is suitable for small batch production.
2. Two-stage method
The two-stage method is to react allyl alcohol with formic acid to generate propyl formate, which is then further decomposed into MMA and carbon dioxide. The advantage of this method is that the amount and rate of reactants can be precisely controlled, thereby improving the quality and yield of the product. However, the operation is complex relative to the single-stage method and is suitable for mass production.
