PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is an important transparent plastic, which is widely used in many fields such as construction, machinery, electronics and automobile manufacturing. In this article, we will introduce the production process and preparation method of PMMA.
1. production process
The production process of
PMMA is divided into single-phase solvent method and two-phase solvent method.
1. Single-phase solvent method
The single-phase solvent method is to mix methyl methacrylate (MMA) and polymerization catalyst and add it to a single solvent for polymerization. Commonly used solvents are ethylbenzene, xylene, etc. The polymerization reaction needs to be carried out at an elevated temperature, usually in the range of 60°C to 110°C. After the reaction is completed, PMMA will form a particulate substance in the solution, which needs to be filtered, washed, dried and other process steps to finally obtain PMMA particles.
2. Biphasic Solvent Method
The biphasic solvent method is to add MMA and polymerization catalyst into two solvents for reaction. One of the solvents is water and the other is an organic solvent such as n-butanol. The polymerization reaction needs to be carried out under high-speed stirring, and the temperature range is usually between 20°C and 80°C. After the reaction is completed, the PMMA will form a particulate substance in the organic solvent, and the PMMA particles need to be finally obtained through process steps such as separation, washing, and drying.
2. preparation method
PMMA preparation method is divided into impregnation method, injection molding method, extrusion method, calendering method and so on.
1. Dipping Method
The
dipping method is to add PMMA particles to a solvent to form a PMMA solution. The material to be prepared is then immersed in the solution and allowed to absorb a sufficient amount of the PMMA solution. Finally, the material is removed from the solution and dried. PMMA products prepared by impregnation method have high transparency and weather resistance, and are often used in the production of optical materials, water storage tanks, etc.
2. injection molding method
injection molding method is to add PMMA particles to the injection molding machine for melting, and then inject the molten material into the mold, and finally get PMMA products. The PMMA products prepared by injection molding method have high precision and smooth surface, and are often used in the production of electrical appliances, toys, etc.
3. Extrusion method
extrusion method is to melt PMMA particles, extrusion in the extruder, and finally get PMMA plate. The PMMA plate prepared by extrusion method has high transparency and uniform thickness, and is often used to make billboards and decorations.
