MBS resin is a thermoplastic elastomer widely used in packaging, construction, furniture and other fields, with good weather resistance, impact resistance and processability. This article will introduce the production process and preparation method of MBS resin.
MBS resin is a copolymer of methyl methacrylate, butadiene and styrene. Its preparation is mainly divided into two steps: first, styrene-butadiene block copolymer (SBS) is synthesized, and then it is reacted with methyl methacrylate to form MBS. In the preparation process of
SBS, butadiene and styrene are first added into the reactor according to a certain proportion, and then polymerized under inert atmosphere to obtain SBS. Commonly used polymerization agents include Ziegler-Natta type catalysts and metal organic catalysts. Then, methyl methacrylate and active stabilizer are added to SBS to form MBS by emulsion polymerization. The key step in the preparation of
MBS is emulsion formation. Emulsifiers are usually used to disperse SBS, methyl methacrylate and other additives in water to form an emulsion of MBS resin. Emulsifiers can effectively reduce the surface tension of two immiscible liquids, making them uniformly dispersed. Generally, nonionic or cationic surfactants are used as emulsifiers.
After the formation of the
emulsion, the emulsion is gelled into a solid MBS resin by adjusting the pH value and adding a curing agent. Commonly used curing agents are hardeners, gelling agents and crosslinking agents. The hardener is a compound capable of bridging molecular chains and containing multiple functional groups. The gelling agent and crosslinking agent are some cyclic or linear molecules, which can produce crosslinking reaction with MBS resin molecules to increase the heat resistance and mechanical properties of MBS resin.
Finally, the MBS resin is processed into articles by thermoforming, extrusion, injection, etc. MBS resin can be mixed with other plastic materials, and can also be added with colorants, enhancers and other ingredients to improve its mechanical properties and meet the application requirements of different fields.
MBS resin with good weather resistance and mechanical properties can be obtained by appropriate monomer ratio, appropriate reaction conditions and the addition of different additives and curing agents during the preparation of MBS resin. With the continuous development and innovation of modern chemical technology, it is believed that MBS resin will be applied in more fields in the future.
