[Industry Focus]:Wanhua Chemical 50000 Tons MS Resin Project Announced, or Will Replace PC, PMMA, PETG and Other Materials

Recently, Wanhua chemical official website publicity annual output of 50000 tons of MS resin project environmental impact report draft. It is reported that the project will land in Wanhua Yantai Chemical Industry Park.

Another "stuck neck" new material project


MS resin refers to the copolymer of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and styrene (SM), which belongs to thermoplastic. Its light transmittance is between PMMA and polystyrene (PS), and it also has PMMA's low static electricity, ultraviolet resistance, extensibility, easy processability and low moisture absorption of PS.

These characteristics make MS resin be regarded as a substitute for transparent polycarbonate (PC), PMMA, polyethylene terephthalate copolymer (PETG) and other materials. At present, the mainland has no effective production capacity, and the MS products used are basically imported from Denka and Taiwan's Chimei.

In March 2023, Wanhua Chemical broke through the key production and manufacturing of optical grade MS resin and other complete sets of technologies. The 1,000-ton MS pilot plant successfully produced qualified products, adding new members to Wanhua Chemical's optical business.


Raw materials rely on Wanhua existing project


it is reported that the raw materials for the annual output of 50000 tons of MS resin project can rely on Wanhua's existing "MMA integration project" and "polyurethane industry chain integration-ethylene project".

Specifically, under normal circumstances, MMA produced by MMA integration project can meet the demand of this new project. If the market situation leads to insufficient MMA output, MMA required for this new project needs to be purchased. Styrene produced by polyurethane industry chain integration-ethylene project can fully meet the needs of this new project and will not cause changes in the scale of polyurethane industry chain integration-ethylene project.


MMA Integration Project


at present, there are 2 sets of MMA devices in Wanhua Yantai Industrial Park.

In January 2019, the first phase of Wanhua Chemical MMA project was put into operation, including 50000 tons/year MMA project and 80000 tons/year PMMA project;

on March 25, 2020, the second phase of the Wanhua Chemical MMA project started. Including 40000 tons/year MAA, 80000 tons/year MMA and 80000 tons/year PMMA, with a total investment of about 2.05 billion yuan.

In June 2023, the EIA of the MMA industrial plant renovation project was approved, and the capacity of the plant remained unchanged before and after the renovation.


Polyurethane Industry Chain Integration-Ethylene Project


the first phase of ethylene project of polyurethane industry chain integration mainly includes 1 million tons/year ethylene combined plant, 400000 tons/year polyvinyl chloride (PVC) plant, 150000 tons/year ethylene oxide (EO) plant, 450000 tons/year linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) plant, 30/650000 tons/year propylene oxide/styrene (PO/SM) plant and 50000 tons/year butadiene plant, and supporting ancillary and public works facilities.

Polyurethane industry chain integration ethylene phase II project mainly includes 1.2 million tons/year ethylene cracking plant, 250000 tons/year low density polyethylene (LDPE) plant, 2 x 200000 tons/year polyolefin elastomer (POE) plant, 200000 tons/year butadiene plant, 5510,000 tons/year pyrolysis gasoline hydrogenation unit (including 30000 tons/year styrene extraction), 400000 tons/year aromatics extraction unit, as well as supporting auxiliary works and utilities.


Downstream Application Aspects


the main application areas of MS are display light guide plates and cosmetic packaging. With the development trend of downstream display panels to large size, lightness and thinness, narrow border and other technologies, it has become the development trend of the industry to replace PMMA with MS as the main raw material to produce micro-structure light guide plates. It is expected that the demand for MS will increase slightly in the future.

In 2016, Fengsheng Optoelectronics, the head enterprise of the domestic extruded light guide plate, successfully realized the mass production of MS extruded light guide plate. Compared with PMMA light guide plate, MS light guide plate has obvious advantages in dimensional stability and is more suitable for the demand of thin-walled and narrow-bezel LCD TV. The application proportion of MS light guide plate is gradually expanding.

In terms of demand, the consumption of MS in 2018 is about 10000 tons, and the consumption will exceed 20000 tons by 2020. At present, the annual consumption of MS resin in China is about 85000 tons. Compared with PMMA light guide plate, MS light guide plate has better profit margin.
