In 2023, the domestic phenolic ketone industry experienced significant capacity expansion. According to statistics, the total production capacity of the industry increased to 10.23 million tons, of which phenol capacity of 6.32 million tons, acetone the production capacity is 3.91 million tons.

Significant growth in phenolic ketone production capacity by 2023

in recent years, China's acetone production capacity has shown a rapid growth trend. From 2019 to 2023, the compound growth rate of acetone production capacity reached 24.64. This growth trend fluctuated from year to year, but the growth rate was particularly pronounced in 2024.

In the past five years, the expansion of acetone plants has been mainly concentrated in 2020, 2022 and 2023. For example, in 2020, a number of companies will put into production new units, such as the first phase of Zhejiang Petrochemical Co., Ltd., the second phase of Lihua Yiweiyuan Chemical Co., Ltd., and Taihua Xingye (Ningbo) Co., Ltd. By 2022, the second phase of Zhejiang Petrochemical Co., Ltd., the technological transformation of Xisa Chemical (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. and the units of Wanhua Chemical Group Co., Ltd. will be put into production one after another. By 2023, Jiangsu Ruiheng New Material Technology Co., Ltd., Shenghong Refining and Chemical (Lianyungang) Co., Ltd., Guangxi Huayi New Material Co., Ltd. and other enterprises put into production, further promoting the growth of acetone production capacity.

in 2023, the regional distribution of acetone production capacity in China is relatively concentrated. East and South China became the main production capacity concentration. Shenghong Refinery and Jiangsu Ruiheng added 250000 tons of acetone plants in January respectively, bringing the total acetone production capacity in East China to 1.99 million tons, accounting for 50.90 percent. The North China region also increased in the fourth quarter. Qingdao Bay added 120000 tons of acetone plants, bringing the acetone production capacity in North China to 880000 tons, accounting for 22.51 percent. New plants were put into production in South China in the first and fourth quarters, 110000 tons from Shanghai Huayi and 180000 tons from Huizhou Zhongxin, respectively, increasing the proportion of production capacity in South China to 13.81 per cent. Finally, in the fourth quarter, two major units were put into operation in Northeast China, 250000 tons of Hengli Petrochemical and 130000 tons of Longjiang Chemical, bringing the proportion of acetone production capacity in Northeast China to 12.79 percent.

With the rapid development of China's phenol and ketone industry, the production capacity of phenol and acetone has achieved significant growth. This growth is reflected not only in the increase in absolute numbers, but also in the diversification of regional distribution. East and South China are still the most important production capacity concentration, but other regions such as North China, Northeast China and South China also show strong growth momentum.
