Nature Description

Colorless liquid. Melting point 19.5-21.5 ℃, boiling point 251 ℃,126 ℃(1.47kPa), relative density 1.2244(20/4 ℃), flash point 132 ℃. It can be miscible with ether, acetone, carbon tetrachloride, benzene, chlorobenzene and gasoline, and react with water and alcohol to decompose. For short, TDI is a mixture of 2,4-isomer and 2,6-isomer, with TDI-65/35(2,4-isomer accounts for 65) and TDI-80/20. The melting point of the former is 3.5-5.5 °c, and the latter is 11.5-13.5 °c.

It is used for organic synthesis, foam production, coating and chemical reagent.

Production method

Nitrotoluene is nitrated from toluene and then reduced to Toluene diamine. Toluene diamine reacts with phosgene to obtain TDI (mainly 2,4-isomer).
