The method uses dimethyl carbonate and ethylene as raw materials, and under the action of a catalyst, a ester exchange reaction occurs to generate 1,2-propylene glycol and methanol. The 1,2-propanediol then undergoes an addition reaction with hydrogen and carbon dioxide to form 1,2-pentanediol.
